It’s Saturday and time for Ricky’s Rants. Women and girl’s who smoke. After spending half of my life dealing with smokers and the aftermath of their decision, I can’t for the life of me understand why people still smoke? I’ll start with people my age who started smoking in the sixties and still smoke. Back then it was a little bit of trying for cool and a lot of rebellion. The news about the danger of smoking was just starting to come out.In 1966 warning labels were placed on cigarettes and pretty much ignored. But why are they still smoking? They tell me how hard it is to quit, and I must agree. But you know what else is hard, breathing. Breathing is much harder than quitting, although it helps, it still doesn’t stop smokers. It’s really sad what these companies have done to people. Remember there is help out there, but I have found that the cig’s always win, always. Even when the sad facts of watching a loved one suffer to breathe and die from the samething they continue to do, and somehow thinking it won’t happen to them. Worse is these are people I care for. Now for the younger girls who are smoking, what the fuck are you thinking? The information is there, the warnings are real, the end is always the same, gasping for breath and gurgling. It’s not pretty, nor cool, nor sexy. The younger smokers really get me, of course they think they will live forever and they still think it’s cool and then of course the rebellion part. The reality is along with lung disease, they don’t think about the leathery skin and wrinkles, the raspy smoker voice and add those sunny beach days, wow SEXY! I feel bad for those my age who continue and feel that “oh well, too late now” as an excuse. I really feel for those younger folks who have more information than any generation on the negative issues that smoking causes, but they continue. One thing I always knew about my career was that there would always be a need, as long as people refuse to acknowledge the science and warnings no matter what it is. Do you really want to die dumb?
